More than 1,000 unidentified bodies found in Delhi this year

New Delhi, Sun May 20 2012, 15:17 hrs

Over 1,000 unidentified bodies have been found in the national capital this year with official statistics suggesting that at least seven such cases are recorded on an average daily.
The recent incident was reported on Friday in which the chopped body of a man, with the head and torso missing, was found in a bag at Defence Colony in south Delhi. Last Monday, the decomposed body of an unidentified youth was recovered in a bag at central Delhi's Prasad Nagar.
Alarmed over the rise in such cases, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit flagged her administration's concerns with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram who suggested that the most of the unidentified bodies being recovered in the city are from the neighbouring states.
Chidambaram's views also suggest that Delhi is fast becoming a favoured place for criminals to dump bodies of victims.
According to official statistics, 1,012 unidentified bodies were recovered in the capital this year till May 19. Last year, the figure was 3,337.
The highest number of bodies (245) were found in North Delhi this year while 116 bodies were found in Central Delhi.
In Outer Delhi, 72 bodies were recovered while North-East Delhi had 68 such incidents. The figures for other districts are: East (60), South East (57), West (56), North-West (55), South (48), New Delhi (31) and South West (28).
Crime and Railways Wing of Delhi Police has also registered 175 such cases while IGI Airport police one case.
A senior police official said criminals find it easy to dump bodies in Delhi after killing the victims elsewhere.
